“if your words could do one thing,” somebody asked, “what would it be?”

“everything,” i answered.

“no, you have to pick one thing,” was the reply.

“well, ‘everything’ is one thing, technically,” i countered. “it’s a noun.”

i woke up several minutes later on the ground with a rapidly swelling right eye. and as i sat in my apartment that afternoon, nursing my wound with alternating pressure from a warm tortilla and a frozen bag of peas, i wondered what was so wrong with my answer. why couldn’t my words do everything? why couldn’t i be the one who changes the world? from that moment on, i decided to make it my personal quest to be the greatest writer in the history of mankind.

then i realized that “everything” is actually an indefinite pronoun. so i went into advertising instead.
